Kick the Procrastination Habit

"I'll get to it–when I get a chance." You know what that means, don't you? You'll never get to it! Here are 8 simple ways to kick the procrastination habit and start getting things done.

  1. BREAK IT DOWN. Seem overwhelming? Don't look at everything as one big project. Break goals, projects or tasks down into small parts. Assign a specific deadline (date and time) to each part.

  2. WRITE IT DOWN. Make it official by recording on paper, what needs to be done. When it's written down, it's more concrete, and there's a greater chance you'll start and complete it.

  3. TELL SOMEONE. Tell a friend, associate or loved one what your plans are. Discuss decisions that need to be made with others. Ask a friend or associate for some ongoing motivation. Sometimes an outside perspective may be all you need to get started.

  4. SCHEDULE. Establish a regular time each day to work on your goal, project or task.

  5. USE PROPER TOOLS. Organize your environment, complete with the tools you need, so it is conducive to working.

  6. POST REMINDERS. Keep your goals in front of you. Post reminders of your goals and deadlines where you can constantly see them.

  7. I'LL ONLY DO THIS, IF I COMPLETE . . . Make something you normally do and enjoy contingent upon doing the avoided task. For example: "I will not watch my favorite television program until I complete Part A of my project." — By the way, no fair cheating!! 🙂

  8. SET REWARDS. Set rewards for your ultimate goals and mini-goals. You'll constantly have something enjoyable to look forward to.

10 Ideas to Help You Remember Better

  1. WRITE IT DOWN:
With the amount of things you have to remember in any given day, why should you try to stuff it all into your memory bank? When you want to remember something, the very best thing to do is write it down. Then, when you need to recall it, it will be there for you in an instant.
  2. KEEP IT TOGETHER:
When you write down things you want to remember, keep them in one consistent place. Otherwise, you're going to spend a lot of time looking for your notes. TIP: The New Get Organized Now! Easy Organizer makes remembering everything a breeze!
  3. GOOD HEALTH:
Eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, and exercise. These are all important for your memory, staying focused and being alert.
  4. RECORD YOUR THOUGHTS:
Sometimes you might want to remember something, but it's impossible for you to write it down, such as when you're driving. A little hand held tape recorder is a wonderful gadget to carry around with you and record your thoughts, or your parking space number, or a phone number you see on a billboard.
  5. CALL YOURSELF:
If you're at the office, and you want to do something when you arrive home, call your answering machine and leave yourself a message. When you get home, you'll listen to your message and remember exactly what you wanted to do.
  6. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF:
If you keep saying you have a bad memory, you'll probably continue to have a bad memory. It's important to have a motivated, I CAN remember attitude.
  7. E-MAIL REMINDERS:
There are many free e-mail reminder services available. You simply type in what you want to remember, such as a birthday, anniversary or event, and you then receive an e-mail reminder when the date is approaching. Try http://www.calendar.yahoo.com
  8. POST-IT NOTES:
Those wonderful, little sticky notes can be amazing memory helpers. Want to remember something before you leave the house? Jot it down on a Post-It Note and stick it on the inside of your door. You'll be sure to see it as you're getting ready to walk out. Have to make an urgent call first thing in the morning? Leave a Post-It Note on your telephone.
  9. TIMERS AND ALARMS:
Take advantage of alarm clocks and timers throughout the day. Have to take the clothes out of the wash at 3:00? Set your alarm clock to remind you. Want to leave for the basketball game by 6:15? Set your timer to beep a few minutes before.
  10. VISUAL REMINDERS:
Visual reminders can help you remember and focus. I especially like visual reminders for remembering your goals. If your goal is to take a trip to a beautiful island in a few years, keep a magazine photograph of the island right on your desk. If your goal is to own your own business one day, find a picture or ornament that will help remind you of this goal each day.

Change Your Handwriting, Change Your Life: Raise Your Self-Esteem

Just as the personality can be determined by the strokes we make as we write, reversing the process and changing those strokes can also change our personality.

I first read about this "graphotherapy" in the early 1960's. They had just begun to use the process with juvenile delinquents to assist them with changing some of the negative aspects of their personalities. I was intrigued and even though I wasn't a juvenile delinquent, decided I could use some improvement too. I changed a couple of strokes (one to add even more creativity), and I liked what I noticed in the results.

Over the years I remember several times of changing my handwriting when I felt particularly stuck in a rut. Of course then I didn't understand the impact of the changes, and not all of them were necessarily positive, but they did cause a shift!!

One of the biggest problems that exist today is the lack of adequate self-esteem. Most people do not give themselves enough credit, and some folks are downright rude to themselves!! This usually develops over time, and is the result of a variety of circumstances and events. Unfortunately, most people who have low self-esteem have reinforced it to the point where they don't even notice how pervasively they perpetuate the negativity in their lives.

The good news is that this is a relatively easy area to change with Graphotherapy.

When you look at your own writing, notice where on the T stem you actually cross your T's. My favorite analogy is the pole at the county fair – you remember the one where the guys used this huge hammer and tried to make the slider hit the bell at the top?? Well, you know who the winners were – the ones who got to the top!! The same is true of your T-bar – the closer to the top you get, the more of a winner you will be.

The height of the T-bar also determines the height of your goals. If your T-bar is low on the stem, you probably either don't set many goals, or you have lots of reasons for not reaching them – and you are bound to stay in a bad situation far longer than you should. If your T-bar is crossed in the middle of the stem, or slightly above middle, you set good, practical goals, based on what you have achieved before. You set your sights based on where you are comfortable, and don't take a lot of risks. In both these cases you are settling for less than you are capable of achieving, and trading comfort (what you already know) for the big successes that take a bit more risk.

Crossing your T-bar at the top of the stem lengthens your vision and your goals, and gives you a larger scope of possibility. Of course, make sure your T-bars are touching the stem. The person whose T-bar flies above the stem is the same person whose head is in the clouds, and is therefore not grounded. We call that person a dreamer, and we all know that as important as dreams are, they must be followed through with practical application in order to be successful.

Take a look at the handwriting of people you know who feel good about themselves, consistently take risks and achieve what they go after. You will find that most of them have consistently high T-bars. This is a trait you can easily change by practicing your T's for 5 to 10 minutes each day (1 to 3 pages daily for 30 days). And it works great with kids, too!! I have testimonials from kids who improved their grades and their social relationships just from changing this one trait.

(Note: Ignore T's where the bar links to the next letter, as in the words "the" or "with" where the bar of the T links into the H. This linking of the T to the next letter is considered "fluidity of thought" and the height of the T-bar is ignored. Also, make your T-bar higher, not your T-stem taller.)

So, keep your T-bars high, and enjoy your successes!!

Simple Abundance

Book Summary

Well, one of the wonderful readers of the Business Connections networking group suggested to me a terrific book, and one that I probably would not have discovered on my own. The book is Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy, by Sarah Ban Breathnach, Warner Books, 1995, $18.95. It has an essay for each day of the year, so it's a good book to have in the bathroom, or any place that you settle down for a few minutes each day.

The author quotes freely from all sorts of people, starting with a quote and expanding on it. She has a lot of interesting things to say about the ways in which we live our lives. This is definitely a woman's book.

I discovered a quote the other day that has quite literally changed my life. It's one of those things we all know, and we've all heard it expressed dozens of different ways, such as "be here now," "this moment is all there is, " "the past is memories and the future doesn't exist, " but somehow this particular phrase really struck me. "Writer Annie Dillard believes, 'How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives."

Well, of course! But how many of us (especially me) go about our days as though our lives were going to arrive once we get through the drudgery? No—this is it!!

Anyway, for me just that one phrase is worth the price of admission, I'm going to make a pretty little sign and put it where I'll see it every morning. Who knows what gem you'll find in this book? Give it a try—you're bound to find something that suits your situation or inclination.
